Who is John Stott?

This piece by David Brooks, “Who is John Stott,” appeared in the November 30, 2004, edition of The New York Times. John Stott has been one of the most influential people in my life, even though from a distance. The first book I read by him was Basic Christianity, and I believe I have read every publication of his since the mid 1960s. I have heard him speak and briefly met him many years ago. He is a disciple of Jesus who models servant-leadership. May God raise up more men like him.

I also have been changed for the better by John R. W. Stott. I have read many of his books. The Cross of Christ is one of my favorites. It is an excellent book from which to gain biblical and spiritual insight. Some people can teach, but can’t preach, and vice versa. Mr. Stott is not only an important theologian, but he is also one of the best preachers it has been my joy to hear.

In a day when talk of the cross is almost avoided, it is men like Stott who keep a balance to our walk with Jesus. May the Lord bless all his ministry over the years.
